A long overdue revisit to the area to see the Marsh Churches, our original visit having been curtailed by the Foot and Mouth horrors of 2001. What makes this particular group of churches so popular with visitors from around the world? The architecture is not of exceptional quality, the monumental sculpture is parochial, the furnishings humble. But they and the landscape have something that is very difficult to quantify and yet crosses all sorts of cultural barriers – they have atmosphere. In all there are about 20 churches that we will try to visit, ranging from Norman to late Georgian interiors and some with lovely furnishings. Accommodation will be at the Grand Burstin Hotel, which is on the seafront in Folkestone and that will be on a half board basis from Friday dinner to Monday breakfast. In addition we will have transport to and from London, the same coach being used for the whole weekend. So, with all meals, accommodation and transport included the cost for the weekend will be £210.00 in total, of which a £25 non returnable deposit will be needed before 23rd February for each person wishing to attend, with the full amount being paid by 20th March.
For those unable to make a weekend of it, a day trip is possible on the Saturday (which will include lunch) for £18 members and £22 non members but not on the Sunday (poor train services) although you will obviously not see as many churches.
